The Yellow Zone is closed October 1 through June 30. The Mud Flats are open July 1 through October 1. Those dates are published, but boundaries and conditions can still change within a season, so confirm before planning mileage around either one.
Washington restrictions tighten through the dry months and are set by state and local authorities rather than by the dunes themselves. Small fires are normally allowed here; that is not a guarantee for the weekend you are coming. Pallets are never allowed.
Late-summer wildfire smoke is now a routine part of the Columbia Basin calendar and can settle in for days with no fire nearby. Check current air quality alongside the forecast, because it is a genuine reason to postpone rather than an inconvenience.
WSDOT covers I-90 and the state routes into Moses Lake, which matters most in winter fog and ice. The recreation area itself is four miles south of the city limits on Potatoe Hill Road.
Fishing regulations, water conditions, cleanup efforts, and local events all shape a trip that is half riding and half lake. WDFW handles the fishing side, and it is separate from anything the county sets for the dunes.
