Shrubsteppe, wetlands, and open water
Dunes, wetland, open water, and shrubsteppe all meet in a small space here. That is why the boundaries are complicated, and why the closures are shaped the way they are.
It looks like scrub and it is one of the more diminished habitats in Washington, supporting birds, small mammals, and plants that live nowhere else in the state. Ground that appears unused from a machine is frequently the most sensitive thing in view.
Closed October 1 through June 30, which covers nesting and the growing season. Nine months closed is a serious commitment of ground, and it is the arrangement that keeps the rest open year round. Respecting it is the cheapest contribution any rider makes.
A single track cut through soft shoreline or wetland vegetation lasts far longer than the weekend that made it. Water and sand meeting is exactly where damage is easiest to cause and slowest to heal. Stay on firm, legal ground.
A Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife wildlife area sits nearby, and it is managed separately from the county ORV park with different rules. Do not assume that what is permitted on the dunes applies across a boundary, and do not assume the reverse either.
Moses Lake supports warmwater species and trout, and fishing here follows current WDFW seasons, licences, and limits, which have nothing to do with county ORV rules. Check them separately if the lake is part of your plan.
Never chase an animal with a machine. Stop at a distance and let it move away on its own terms. Waterfowl in particular will flush off a wetland at the sound of an engine, and repeatedly pushing birds off feeding or resting ground has a real cost even when nothing visibly happens.
This is county land beside sensitive habitat, four miles from a growing city. Riding areas in that position stay open because the case for them holds up. Every weekend that closures are respected and litter goes home, that case gets easier to make.
